Are you Getting Enough Vitamin A?

Vitamin A is one the four fat-soluble vitamins that is absorbed from the digestive tract and bound to lipids (fats). Vitamin A is critical for human growth and development because it plays an important role in bone development. Since, vitamin A is stored in the body any excess intake of vitamin A could lead to potential toxic effects in the human body. Also, a vitamin A deficiency could lead to several potential side effects as well. Some of these side effects may include: decreased growth rate, diminished ability to fight infectious diseases and slow bone development.

Several studies suggest that males between the ages 19-50 should consume 900mg of vitamin A per day, while females between the ages 19-50 should consume 700mg per day. Anything above or below this could lead to potential harmful effects on the human body.

Some foods that are a good source of vitamin A include: sweet potatoes, lettuce, red peppers and various herbs (parsley, basal). If you do not eat a lot of vegetables or foods that contain vitamin A, you may want to consider taking a vitamin A supplement. This will ensure you’re getting your daily recommended intake of vitamin A.
